Mythology and flamenco meet in “Fragments of The Night,” Sara Jiménez’s new In Progress project

From March 3 to 9, dancer and choreographer Sara Jiménez has developed her creative residency as part of Flamenco Festival’s In Progress program of artistic residencies in Torrox (Málaga), where she has continued the creation process of “Fragmentos de la noche” (Fragments of The Night). During this phase, she has worked with Juan Kruz Díaz de Garaio Esnaola on stage direction, Enrique Fuenteblanca on conceptual support, Teresa Hernández on composition and singing, and Pablo Leira (Serendipia Global) on production and distribution.

A mythological exploration through flamenco and dance

“Fragments of The Night” is a choreographic and sonic journey that intertwines mythology and flamenco, proposing an exploration of the mythical experience through dance and literature. The piece unfolds in a stage space abandoned to the passage of time, where three figures—guitar, voice, and dance—navigate different myths, from Orpheus to Dionysian bacchanals, passing through the weddings of Cupid and Psyche and contemporary wars. Like a map of the night, the performance moves through dark territories where myths come to life and converse with the present.

A language that transcends artistic boundaries

The proposal of Sara Jiménez is characterized by a choreographic research that places dance at the intersection of flamenco and theater, exploring new expressive possibilities within flamenco. Through an expansive and experimental language, the work is structured around a dialogue between flamenco and contemporary music, supported by a meticulous design of scenic space, lighting, and sound. The guitar of José Muñoz «El Peli», sound effects, and carefully selected lyrics create an atmospheric universe where the audience can immerse themselves in a dreamlike and symbolic landscape.

This residency has allowed Sara Jiménez to continue developing a working methodology based on research and experimentation, where the creative process is conceived as a living organism in constant transformation. The piece, which will have its premiere at Flamenco Festival Esch (Luxembourg), adapts to different spaces and stage formats, ensuring that each performance is a unique experience.

In Progress: A space for research and experimentation

Promoted by Flamenco Festival, the Concienciarte Foundation, and the City Council of Torrox, the In Progress program is a laboratory for experimentation and conscious creation within flamenco. Through artistic residencies, this space offers creators the opportunity to delve into their processes without the pressure of an immediate final result, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and collective transformation through art.

This residency program, which aims to expand flamenco’s creative horizons, has become a reference point for artists exploring new forms of expression. Since its inception, In Progress has promoted research and experimentation in a natural environment, away from the fast pace of major cities, encouraging artistic exchange and collaboration.

The next In Progress residencies in Torrox will take place in April, featuring the projects “La Familia” by Julio Ruiz (April 4 to 6) and “Deuteronomio 5:8-10” by Iván Orellana and Alberto Sellés (April 21 to 25). Both creative processes will continue the philosophy of In Progress, where flamenco becomes a tool for exploration and transformation.
