María Moreno concludes her In Progress creative residency in Torrox with the preview of Magnificat

On Saturday, May 24 at 8:00 PM, the Teatro Municipal Villa de Torrox will host the world premiere of Magnificat, the highly anticipated new creation by flamenco artist María Moreno, as the culmination of her artistic residency within Flamenco Festival’s prestigious In Progress programme.

Throughout the month of May, dancer and choreographer María Moreno has developed her latest work, Magnificat, in Torrox, as part of the In Progress residency programme, an initiative led by Flamenco Festival and the Torrox City Council, with the support of the Spanish Ministry of Culture and the Fundación Concienciarte.

The process culminates this Saturday, May 24, with a public showcase offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience the work in its most vibrant and experimental stage, just before its official premiere at the upcoming Bienal de Flamenco de Madrid.

Magnificat: An expanded ritual of flamenco

Magnificat is María Moreno’s seventh solo project. Recipient of the Giraldillo Revelation Award from the Seville Biennial and the Magic Moment Prize for More(no)More, Moreno now presents a piece that is both ceremony and transformation — a ritual in progress where dance becomes prayer and the stage a site of emotional metamorphosis.

According to the artist, the piece invites the audience on “a journey through the states of the soul and the body,” envisioned as an invocation that merges music, dramaturgy, movement, and contemporary symbolism.

For this creation, Moreno has gathered an outstanding artistic team:

Raúl Cantizano, responsible for the musical direction, is a key figure in experimental flamenco guitar;

Rosa Romero signs the dramaturgy and also performs on stage alongside Moreno;

Rafael R. Villalobos, acclaimed director with credits at La Monnaie, Teatro Real, and the Liceu, contributes to the scenic direction;

Jaime Conde Salazar, a major voice in contemporary dance and flamenco theory, serves as dramaturgical advisor.

Masterclass with artist Paula Comitre

Before the performance, from 6:45 to 7:45 PM, ticket holders are invited to attend a free flamenco class led by dancer Paula Comitre. This is a rare opportunity to experience flamenco first-hand, guided by one of the most promising creators on today’s scene.

Comitre is also part of the In Progress programme, collaborating with Florencia Oz and Carmen Angulo on the project Reflexiones sobre las Parcas, which will travel to Flamenco Festival London in the coming weeks.
