Ana Almagro explores new frontiers of flamenco in Torrox with her creative residency «Ana Almagro x ELAMOR»
From February 27 to March 2, dancer and choreographer Ana Almagro has carried out the first phase of her creative residency within the framework of In Progress Flamenco Festival Torrox. In this initial stage of «Ana Almagro x ELAMOR«, she worked alongside Abel Hernández on musical composition and Eduardo Rivero on stage direction. This process will continue in May with a second phase of work in the same space.
A creative journey that will culminate at the IX Bienal de Flamenco de Málaga
«Ana Almagro x ELAMOR» is a project that has taken shape through various artistic residencies, beginning its journey in April 2024 at the Centro Coreográfico Canal, later receiving support from Azala Espacios de Creación and In Progress Flamenco Festival Torrox during the early months of 2025. The piece has several confirmed performances, including a presentation in a non-conventional space at the Goethe-Institut in Madrid, a pre-premiere in Torrox coinciding with the residency, and its official premiere at the IX Bienal de Flamenco de Málaga.

An experimental dialogue with flamenco
This production emerges from the dialogue between Ana Almagro and Eduardo Rivero, who explore heterodox layers of time and languages. In Almagro’s words: “I have tried to capture what is concrete: the gesture, the form, the diagonals. At first, the arms, the stamping of the feet, and the twisting movements create a hermetic sensation that is broken by a fall. The floor marks the beginning of a more human time, with layers of sound and movements that traverse the known freely until reaching a state of calm.”
With a cutting-edge approach, the piece develops through the interaction of elements such as shoes, a sound-launching machine, text, and live music, creating an immersive and organic atmosphere. It is a research process that seeks to push the boundaries of flamenco, experimenting with innovation and overlapping artistic languages.
The 2025 edition of In Progress will continue with the participation of other artists such as María Moreno, La Lupi, Sara Jiménez, Julio Ruiz, Iván Orellana alongside Alberto Sellés, and the collective formed by Florencia Oz, Paula Comitre, and Carmen Angulo. All of them will develop their projects in Torrox, finding an ideal space for research and experimentation.
The commitment of In Progress to innovation and interdisciplinary dialogue continues to grow stronger year after year, proving that flamenco is an ever-evolving art form. In May, Ana Almagro will return to Torrox for the second phase of her technical residency, culminating in a pre-premiere on May 30, before its official premiere on June 12 at the IX Bienal de Flamenco de Málaga.
