Lucía La Piñona opens the In Progress 2025 residencies with the pre-premiere of «Lucía en Vivo» in Torrox

From February 10 to 15, 2025, renowned dancer Lucía La Piñona carried out her artistic residency as part of In Progress, the creative program promoted by the Torrox City Council and Flamenco Festival. This space for experimentation and development has allowed the artist to delve deeper into her new project, Lucía en Vivo, which had its pre-premiere on February 15 at the Teatro Municipal Villa de Torrox.

A Flamenco Lab in Motion

During her stay in Torrox, Lucía La Piñona has intensely explored her musical and bodily memory, a process that has taken shape in Lucía en Vivo. This project breaks away from conventional flamenco structures, opting for an organic and ever-evolving stage performance, where singing, music, and dance merge into an immersive experience for the audience.

Lucía en Vivo is not just a show; it is an open-ended process in which the dancer moves freely through flamenco and its boundaries, allowing her body to organically express thoughts, emotions, and internal contradictions. It is a «Dance Concert», where the dance is not subordinated to singing or guitar playing, but rather the artist’s body becomes an instrument that sings and resonates through movement.

The ensemble accompanying La Piñona in this creative process includes Manuel Pajares (vocals), Ramón Amador (guitar), Juanfe Pérez (electric bass), and Javier Rabadán (drums). Additionally, the stage direction has been led by Alberto Velasco, lighting design by Benito Jiménez, and costume design by Belén de la Quintana, with garment construction by Pili Cordero.

A Pre-Premiere True to the In Progress Spirit

The culmination of the residency was the pre-premiere of Lucía en Vivo on February 15, offering the Torrox audience a chance to witness the evolution of a creative process in full development. With a captivated audience, Lucía La Piñona shared the essence of her work, providing a glimpse of the official premiere set to take place on February 24 at the XXIX Festival de Jerez.

This pre-premiere aligns with the philosophy of In Progress, which aims to bring the audience closer to the experience of artists in the midst of creation. Since 2022, the initiative has established itself as a key platform for the development of contemporary flamenco, transforming Torrox into a meeting point for both emerging and established creators.

Inspired by the dynamics of live music concerts, the show invites the audience to take an active role in the stage process, challenging the rigidity and restraint often associated with flamenco dance performances. The 2025 edition of In Progress will continue with the participation of artists such as María Moreno, La Lupi, Sara Jiménez, Julio Ruiz, Iván Orellana alongside Alberto Sellés, Ana Almagro, and the collective formed by Florencia Oz, Paula Comitre, and Carmen Angulo. Each of them will develop their projects in Torrox, where they will find a space conducive to research and experimentation.
